Montreal is the second-largest city in Canada and the largest city in the province of Quebec. The city proper covers most of the Island of Montreal at the confluence of the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers. The port of Montreal lies at one end of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, which is the river gateway that stretches from the Great Lakes into the Atlantic Ocean. Today is an important centre of commerce, finance, industry, technology, culture and world affairs, surpassed in commercial importance by Toronto.

Montreal Quebec is a unique and fascinating city offering exciting entertainment and cultural diversity. A place where people from all around the globe come together to enjoy a Canadian city with a European flair. Known as the city for “walkers”, take a stroll downtown or through Old Montreal.

An island set along the almighty St. Lawrence River, Montreal is known as the city built around a mountain (Mont Real) meaning “real mountain”. Enjoy the spectacular views from the mountain lookout, when on a clear day you can see forever.

Old Montreal is a jewel nestled along the St. Lawrence River. Once a fortified city, the old town is now a safe and vibrant community.

Like Quebec City, Old Montreal is very European in character. Cobblestone streets, a café culture, and historic 17th and 18th century architecture, all contribute to the quaint charm of Old Montreal that is unique amongst cities in North America. (Source: gocanada.about.com).

Climate

Montreal's climate varies a lot over the year. The city is known for its cold winters, but its summers are hot and generally sunny, with occasional muggy days. May and October are arguably the pleasantest months for outdoor activities and walking. Evenings will often remain a little chilly except on the hottest days.

One thing worth mentioning about Montreal is that it begins to snow in late November and the snow, while quickly removed from roads and sidewalks, piles up everywhere else and remains part of the landscape until it begins to retreat sometime in mid-March.

Average temperatures vary from 10-25°F (-13°-5°C) in January to 65-80°F (18°-27°C) in July.
